Nomination for 2016:

Lester, Eric Making Light of Death. Columbia Magazine, Spring 2016

Disposal of human remains is no longer sustainable, especially in densely populated urban areas. This article, a report of "the search for cleaner, smarter alternatives" to burial and cremation, is one of the most thought provoking pieces we have read this year. It will nudge readers to consider a difficult but inescapable end of life concern and surprising options that could become available.
